I had the privilege to meet John Epley, MD, in 2001 at AAO-HNS in Denver, CO. I also had the pleasure of meeting Cathy Epley, daughter. He invited me to his clinic in Portland to see his amazing invention, the OMNIAX CHAIR. His personality was humble - he was a genuinely good human being. He wanted to do great for humanity, as do I now with FYZICAL using the FYZICAL Balance Paradigm. Believing in him, FYZICAL now owns three OMIAX Chairs across the US.
John McNaughton Epley (1930-2019) was an American otolaryngologist who developed the Epley maneuver, a treatment for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). BPPV is a common inner ear disorder that causes brief episodes of vertigo, dizziness, and nausea.
The Epley maneuver is a simple, effective procedure that can be performed by a doctor or by the patient themselves.
Epley was born in Portland, Oregon, in 1930. He graduated from the University of Oregon Medical School in 1953. After completing his residency in otolaryngology, he practiced in Portland for over 40 years.
In 1979, Epley published a paper in the journal Archives of Otolaryngology describing his new theory of BPPV. He proposed that the condition was caused by free-floating particles in the inner ear that would move when the head was turned, causing the sensation of vertigo. He also developed a treatment procedure to move the particles back into place, which is now known as the Epley maneuver.
